The Playbook of Sports Communications

On March 6th, Kennesaw PRSSA held a Sports PR meeting with guest speaker Max Strauss, Brand Communications Director for the Atlanta Hawks & State Farm Arena. This meeting allowed students to learn more about the fast-paced, exciting world of sports communications from a professional who has been on the front lines for 10+ years. As a communication director, Max gave details about handling social media for an NBA sports team, how two days are never the same within the communication department, and gave an encouraging background on how he made it to where he is today. Through Max’s experiences, students were able to see how valuable communications are to the ebb and flow of a sports organization.

Teamwork is required not only from sports players but also from those behind the scenes. As a Brand Communication Director, Max reflected on how valuable it is to have a team of people who can support or critique ideas so that the brand and the consumer’s interests are always in alignment. In the world of PR, it is important to know that you will be engaging with a diverse community of people. This only boosts the need for collaboration, as a way to understand what initiative needs to be taken.

Max also emphasized the importance of connections. Having someone who can vouch for your work ethic is one of the most valuable tool you can have. You should always aim to be the worker that people can rely on and trust to get a job done well. Speak to people who are in your dream field now, get to know their story, and don’t hesitate to ask about opportunities. Being interested in making genuine connections can make you stand out and you won’t even know it.
